Romantic Getaway in Traverse City: A Weekend Itinerary for Couples

April 16, 2026

Traverse City is a beach town, a wine region, and a food destination all at once, in a package that feels made for couples. The kind of place where a sunset over the bay feels like it was scheduled just for you, where you can walk from a wine tasting to dinner to your front door, and where "let's just stay in tonight" means a fire pit under the stars and a bottle of something local. Whether it's an anniversary, a birthday, or just a weekend because you need one, here's how to do it right.

Friday Evening: Arrive & Unwind

Get here. Settle in. Resist the urge to plan too hard. If you're staying at Historic Hearth in the Grand Traverse Commons, you can walk to dinner within minutes of dropping your bags. Trattoria Stella, tucked into the old State Hospital building, is the kind of restaurant that makes you feel like you're somewhere in the Italian countryside. Handmade pasta, a wine list that takes its job seriously, and candlelit ambiance that does the heavy lifting for any date night. Book a reservation in advance.

If Stella's booked, The Franklin is excellent, craft cocktails, elevated comfort food, and a vibe that manages to be both upscale and genuinely relaxed. After dinner, walk the Commons grounds. The historic brick buildings are lit beautifully at night, and in the quiet of evening, it feels like you have the whole place to yourselves.

Prefer seclusion over walkability? The Roost A-Frame is a completely different kind of romantic, private cabin in the woods, hot tub on the back deck, fire pit surrounded by pines. Pick up takeout from a downtown restaurant on your way in, or stop at Burritt's Fresh Markets for charcuterie supplies and a bottle of local wine. Your first night is about arriving, not performing.

Saturday: The Full Day

Morning

Sleep in. This isn't a work trip. When you're ready, start with coffee at Higher Grounds Trading Co. (they roast on-site; the pour-over is stellar) or Cuppa Joe on Front Street for something more casual. For breakfast, BLK MRKT downtown keeps it simple and excellent, or Red Spire Brunch House at the Commons is worth the trip for their French toast and mimosa flight. (The full coffee and brunch guide has more options.)

Late Morning: Wine Tasting

Head to the Leelanau Peninsula for wine. The drive itself is beautiful, rolling hills, vineyards, water views. For a romantic tasting experience, Brys Estate has a hilltop tasting room with panoramic vineyard views. Black Star Farms feels like a European estate. Left Foot Charley in the Commons is perfect if you'd rather stay local, natural wines, ciders, and a tasting room with serious character. Two or three stops is the sweet spot; you want to enjoy the wine, not endure it.

Afternoon

Head back and recharge. If you're at the A-Frame, this is hot tub time. If you're in town, browse the shops along Front Street or the boutiques in the downtown district. Grab an afternoon coffee and just wander. The goal is to feel unhurried.

Sunset

Don't miss this. Traverse City sunsets over West Grand Traverse Bay are genuinely spectacular, the sky turns every shade of orange and pink, and the whole bay reflects it back. Best spots: Clinch Park Beach (downtown, walkable), the end of the Open Space on the waterfront, or, for something more dramatic, drive to Empire Bluff and catch sunset from the overlook above Sleeping Bear Dunes. Check sunset times before you go; in summer it can be as late as 9:30pm.

Dinner

Saturday dinner is the centerpiece. The Cooks' House is one of the best restaurants in Michigan, an intimate, seasonal tasting menu with maybe 30 seats. Book well in advance. Alliance is the newcomer generating serious buzz, creative dishes, excellent cocktails, and a beautiful space. For something more relaxed but still special, Mama Lu's serves some of the best tacos in Northern Michigan in a lively, welcoming setting. Browse the full list in our Traverse City food and drink guide.

Sunday: Slow Morning

No alarms. Make coffee in the kitchen. If you're at the A-Frame, sit on the deck and listen to the woods wake up. If you're at Historic Hearth, walk to the Commons and grab pastries. This is the morning where you say things like "we should do this more often" and actually mean it.

Before you leave, take one more walk, along the waterfront, through the Commons grounds, or on a quick loop of the TART Trail. Pick up something to take home: a bottle of wine from your favorite tasting, smoked whitefish dip from Burritt's, or chocolate from Grocer's Daughter in Empire.

Restaurants to book in advance:

The Cooks' House, Trattoria Stella, and Alliance all take reservations and fill up, especially on weekends. Book at least a week ahead in summer, a few days in shoulder season. The Franklin, Mama Lu's, and most tasting rooms are walk-in friendly.

Where to Stay: Two Ways to Do It

Walkable Downtown Romance

Historic Hearth puts you in the Grand Traverse Commons, steps from Trattoria Stella, Left Foot Charley, and a dozen other restaurants and shops. No driving required on date night. Walk to dinner, walk home through the historic grounds, open a bottle on the patio.

Secluded Nature Retreat

The Roost A-Frame is for the couple that wants privacy, quiet, and a hot tub under the stars. Tucked into the woods outside Lake Ann, it's 25 minutes from downtown TC and close to Sleeping Bear Dunes. The fire pit, the soaring windows, the sound of nothing, this is romance without trying.
