Suttons Bay and Lake Leelanau anchor the Leelanau Peninsula wine country. The dining scene here is charming and increasingly sophisticated—several new establishments opened in 2024–2025. These spots are perfectly positioned for pre-winery fuel or a relaxed morning before exploring the peninsula.

Coffee Shops

Hive Coffee Co.

The area's go-to coffee destination since opening November 2023

Location: 206 N St. Joseph Street, Suite B, Suttons Bay (downtown)

Hours: Weekdays 7am-2pm, weekends 8am-3pm (summer hours 8am-4pm)

Order this: House-made seasonal syrups including ginger/clove/spice, chestnut, and maple-sage-rosemary. The 'Tree Hugger' (maple syrup espresso or matcha) and waffles-on-a-stick are signatures.

The vibe: Bright and airy (in the former Mundos North space) with community-focused warmth. Supports mental health organizations and bee conservation. The primary hangout spot in Suttons Bay—welcoming to laptops and lingering.

Good to know: All items accommodate vegan and gluten-free diets. Same ownership group opened Birdie's Sandwich Shop (behind Hive) and Little Boat Coffee in Leland.

Little Boat Coffee

New espresso bar in Leland's Fishtown area (opened late 2024)

Location: 106 N Main Street, Leland (in the Leland Courtyard near Historic Fishtown)

Hours: 8am-3pm, closed Tuesday (still establishing winter hours—call ahead)

Order this: Toasted Pecan Latte, The Nog (seasonal). Same ownership as Hive with a conservation mission supporting Michigan waterways and Piping Plover preservation.

The vibe: Tiny, nautical, high-quality. Primarily walk-up/take-out for Fishtown foot traffic.

Good to know: New spot, still finding its rhythm. Perfect grab-and-go while exploring Fishtown.

Pedaling Beans Coffeehouse

Cycling-themed coffee shop—the hub for Leelanau Trail riders

Location: 116 E Philip Street, Lake Leelanau (near The Narrows)

Hours: Mon-Sat 6am-6pm, Sun 8am-1pm

Order this: Homemade blueberry scones (excellent), Americanos, smoothies for mid-ride refreshment. Baked goods sourced from 9 Bean Rows and Third Coast (gluten-free options).

The vibe: Energetic and casual with bicycle memorabilia throughout. Outdoor seating under tall trees. A great pitstop for cyclists biking between Suttons Bay and TC.

Good to know: Opens at 6am—one of the earliest options on the peninsula. Perfect for ambitious cyclists and early risers.

Café VI (at VI Grill)

Morning café inside the oldest eating establishment in Leelanau County (est. 1871)

The vibe: Minimalist, agrarian-chic architecture on a working farm. Guests can ski or bike in via the TART trail. Sophisticated, relaxed, incredibly photogenic. Represents the pinnacle of the 'Leelanau lifestyle.'

Good to know: No reservations—first come, first served. Check for winter closures.

The Cove

Location: 111 W River Street, Leland (in Historic Fishtown)

Hours: Lunch focused; check current hours

Order this: Famous seafood chowder, intense Bloody Marys garnished with an entire smoked fish. Perfect for brunch drinks.

The vibe: Overlooking the dam waterfalls with views to Lake Michigan and the Manitou Islands.

Good to know: More lunch than breakfast, but the Bloody Marys make it brunch-worthy.
