What's New for the 100th Anniversary
The headliner for 2026 is a new nighttime air show over West Grand Traverse Bay. Details are still being finalized, but this will be the first-ever nighttime show in the festival's history — think illuminated jets and pyrotechnics over the water. Combined with the traditional July 4th fireworks, the opening weekend is going to be extraordinary.

Air Shows
The Cherry Festival air show is a Traverse City institution. Military and civilian aircraft perform over the bay, and the whole waterfront becomes a viewing gallery. Shows typically run during the afternoon, with the new nighttime show adding an evening dimension. Best free viewing: anywhere along the Open Space waterfront or Clinch Park Beach. For a less crowded vantage point, head to the West End or Elmwood Township beach.
Cherry Royale Parade
The parade runs down Front Street and is a classic Americana affair — floats, marching bands, cherry-themed everything. It's the festival's signature event and draws enormous crowds. Stake out your spot early (like, an hour early) if you want front-row sidewalk seating. The parade typically runs on the final Saturday morning.
Concerts & Entertainment
Free concerts on multiple stages throughout the week. Past headliners have included national touring acts alongside regional favorites. The main stage is on the Open Space by the bay, and the vibe is relaxed — bring a blanket, grab a cherry bratwurst from one of the vendors, and enjoy the music with the water behind the stage.
Pie Eating Contest & Cherry Pit Spit
Yes, it's exactly what it sounds like. The cherry pit spit is a real competitive event with a real world record (over 100 feet). The pie eating contest is messy, enthusiastic, and delightfully absurd. Both are free to watch and deeply entertaining. The pit spit usually takes place at the Open Space on Wednesday of festival week.
Logistics & Tips
Parking
Let's be honest: parking during Cherry Festival is a challenge. Downtown lots fill up fast, and street parking evaporates by mid-morning. Your best options:
- Park at the Grand Traverse Mall and take the BATA shuttle (free during festival week).
- Park at the Civic Center lot on Boardman Avenue — a 10-minute walk to the Open Space.
- Bike in. Seriously. If you're staying at a Roost property, biking the TART Trail into town is faster than driving during festival week, and you skip the parking entirely.
- Go early or go late. The festival grounds are less crowded in the morning and after 8pm.
Dining During Festival Week
Every restaurant in Traverse City is busy during Cherry Festival. For sit-down dining, make reservations well in advance — at least two weeks ahead for popular spots. Festival food vendors along the Open Space offer cherry-themed everything — cherry bratwurst, cherry pie, cherry ice cream, cherry salsa — plus standard fair food.

Beating the Crowds
The festival is concentrated along the waterfront and downtown. That means everything else — the wineries, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, the quiet beaches, the Leelanau Peninsula — is relatively uncrowded, because everyone is at the festival. Use this to your advantage: spend mornings at the beach or on a hike, head to the festival in the late afternoon, and stay for the evening entertainment.
